Personally, I have been feeding our dogs goat’s milk for years to add extra palatability. Most dog’s LOVE the taste, and it’s a great way to entice picky dogs to eat for food.

But then why not cow’s milk? Like many humans, many dog’s are lactose intolerant and have difficulty digesting cow’s milk. So while dog’s may love a cup of cow’s milk in their bowl, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and flatulence. Cow’s milk also contains a large amount of fat, natural sugar and calories, so it’s simply not worth the risk of your dog having an upset stomach.

Goat’s Milk benefits

Goat’s milk does contain lactose, but unpasteurized goat’s milk also contains the lactase enzyme which helps breaks down lactose. In addition, the smaller fat globules and protein structure in goat’s milk make it easier on the digestive system. It’s also a great source of natural probiotics, which can further help break down food particles in the gut.

Compared to cow’s milk, goat’s milk has more of many beneficial nutrients, like protein, calcium, phosphorous, vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium. Vitamins A and C are powerful antioxidants that help protect your dog against infection and diseases. The minerals and fatty acids in goat’s milk also help strengthen teeth and bones and improve your dog’s skin and coat.

One thing to note: Goat’s milk also contains more fat and calories than cow’s milk, which is great if you’re wanting to add more calories for an underweight dog. However, if your dog is maintaining or needs to lose weight, you’ll want to factor this into their daily calorie needs to avoid excess weight gain.

The two most common forms of goat’s milk supplements sold is powdered and fresh. Fresh goat’s milk for dogs can be purchased at many pet stores, online from raw dog food companies or in person at a local farm. If purchased online, it’s sent to your door frozen and can be stored in your freezer until you’re ready to feed. Nutrient wise, powdered and fresh milk are near identical, so it’s really about what you (and your dog) prefer!

Fresh Goats Milk

Personally, I prefer fresh, raw goat’s milk from a local farm for my dog’s. If you know your dogs do well on goat’s milk, you can buy it by the gallon at a much more affordable price vs buying fresh from a pet food company. I’m currently paying $10/gallon for raw goat’s milk from a local farm, and many farms sell it even cheaper than this! This is going to be your most natural, minimally processed option as well.

If you’re unable to find a farm near you that sells raw goats milk, the below are the next best options for fresh goats milk.

ANSWERS Pet Food

Answers Pet Food is a popular raw pet food brand that uses organic and pasture raised meat, as well as adding superfoods for added nourishment. What makes Answers stand apart with their goat milk supplement is that it’s fermented, which adds good bacteria for a healthy gut. This just means the good bacteria is predigesting it, and is completely safe to feed!

Most of the batches will fall somewhere in the middle, with a slight sour smell and small to medium curds throughout. All will continue to ferment in the fridge throughout the 30 days, getting more curdled and the sour smell will increase. In fact, the more curds the safer and more nutrient dense the milk is, so continue to feed for the entire 30 days.

Goat Milk Puppucino

This is a modified version of a recipe I found online for whipped cream that is safe for your pup! What’s better than a homemade pup cup? Fresh raw goats milk would probably work best for this as full fat milk will whip better! The unflavored gelatin will help the milk maintain its volume once whipped and is perfectly save for your dog. Add a dollop to your dog’s food, give as a treat or add it to their Kong!

Note: If this turns out more like milk jelly/jello instead of whipped cream, then that’s a-ok! Your dog will still absolutely love it!

Ingredients

2 tsp of unflavored gelatin
1 1/4 cups of cold fresh raw goats milk

Recipe

Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of gelatin over 1/4 cup of cold milk. Stir in and let sit for 5-10 minutes to thicken.
Once the gelatin has thickened, microwave for 15-30 seconds until liquified.
Combine 1 cup of cold milk with the gelatin mixture. Stir well and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
Once chilled, whisk until the milk grows thick and holds peaks.

Frozen Dog Treats

Your dog will love these yummy frozen treats, especially in the summer months. They’re packed with nutritious berries, coconut oil, chia seeds, yogurt and of course - goats milk!

Ingredients

2 cups liquid goat’s milk
1/4 cup coconut oil (organic, virgin)
1/4 cup plain greek yogurt
1/2 cup organic blueberries
1/2 cup organic strawberries
2 TBSP organic chia seeds

Recipe

Slightly warm your goat’s milk to room temperature (70-80 degrees). I heated ours in a glass measuring cup in the microwave in 10-30 second intervals until just room temperature.
Mix in coconut oil and stir until melted
Stir in greek yogurt until blended
Pour into blender
Add fruit and blend until the fruit is broken down
Pour into a medium bowl and add chia seeds. Allow mixture to sit for 5 minutes to rehydrate seeds
Spoon into a freezer-safe silicone mold and place in freezer for about one hour
Once frozen, pop out and serve!

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups flour (all purpose or whole wheat is fine)
1 tsp baking soda
3/4 cup organic pumpkin puree
1/2 cup organic unsweetened applesauce
1/3 cup of natural peanut butter (xylitol free)
1 large egg
3 TBSP liquid goat’s milk

For Icing:

1 cup whipped goat cream from above (You can also use Bones & Co Goat Whip or plain greek yogurt)
1/2 cup of natural peanut butter (xylitol free)

Recipe

Preheat over to 350 degrees and spray two 6-inch cake pans with cooking oil
Whisk together dry ingredients in medium bowl
In large bowl, whisk together wet ingredients. Fold in dry ingredients.
Divide the batter evenly between 2 cake pans and bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely.
For icing, fold in peanut butter into your homemade goats milk whipped cream.
Ice cake and decorate with your dogs favorite treats!

Peanut Butter Goat’s Milk Treats

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups flour (all purpose or whole wheat)
1 large egg
1 cup natural peanut butter (xylitol free)
1 cup liquid goat’s milk
2 TBSP honey

For frosting:

2 TBSP natural peanut butter
1 TBSP honey
1/3 cup cornstarch
3-4 tablespoons hot water

Recipe

Preheat over to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
In a large bowl, combine the first five ingredients until you have a stiff dough
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick and use a cookie cutter to make some fun shapes.
To make the frosting, combine the peanut butter and honey in a microwaveable bowl, and heat in the microwave in 15 second increments, stirring in between, until melted.
Add the melted peanut butter mixture to the cornstarch and stir until just combined.
Add to a ziplock bag with the corner snipped and pipe designs on top of each cookie!

Summary

Goat’s milk is a yummy supplement and offers many benefits to dogs, including immune system support, allergy relief and digestion support! It’s also a wonderful additive for picky dogs to encourage them to eat their food and an easy way to add additional beneficial calories to underweight dogs. If your dog is at an ideal weight or overweight, you’ll want to be mindful of the extra calories goats milk provides to avoid weight gain.

Goat’s milk comes in both powdered and liquid form. It can be quite pricey, but fresh milk from a local farm and powdered milk will be your most affordable options.
